Generic Efudex (fluorouracil) is a tropical cream containing the antineoplastic antimetabolite fluorinated pyrimidine 5-fluorouracil, which is used to treat solar keratoses and multiple actinic. The cream consists of either five per cent or two per cent fluorouracil as a weight/weight basis. The drug also consists of hydroxypropyl cellulose, tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane, parabens (propyl and methyl), disodium edentate and propylene glycol. It comprises five percent fluorouracil on a vanishing cream base and consists of stearyl alcohol, white petrolatum, propylene glycol, parabens (propyl and methyl) and polysorbate 60.

Fluorouracil, chemically is 5-fluoro-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione. The crystalline powdered chemical is a white or practically white substance which is insignificantly soluble in alcohol and sparsely soluble in water. Each gram of fluorouracil has been found to be soluble in 100 ml of propylene glycol. 5- fluorouracil has a molecular weight of 130.08.
